Iron and the Herb Milk Thistle

This is a short blog post to make thyroid patients aware of one of the side effects of using the herb Milk Thistle. Milk Thistle is often used because of its properties of detoxification of the liver. It is suggested that Milk Thistle can be helpful in improved the conversion of FT4 to FT3 and also in reducing SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin).

However, Milk Thistle can lower iron levels.

For those thyroid patients who have low iron it is important to note that Milk Thistle is also well documented for its properties of treating excess iron, as it reduces iron absorption and chelates iron out of the body.

I think it is important to be aware of the above and do your own research.
